Martindale revels in 'Justified' run

Margo Martindale was unmistakably thrilled by her Emmy win in the supporting drama actress category for her work as Mags Bennett on FX's "Justified." But even as her next series regular role on CBS' new fall series "A Gifted Man" is due to hit the airwaves Friday, it was hard not to detect a trace of lament from Martindale that her "Justified" days were behind her. "I'm thrilled -- I'm on cloud nine," Martindale said backstage at the Nokia after receiving her kudo. "I'm out of my body. It's just been a joyous year, a joyous ride. I love the work, and I loved working with these actors. It was just a perfect fit for me. Unfortunately, it's in the past." Martindale said she was originally booked for only four episodes on "Justified," but with her character's second-season arc evolving to become a major antagonist for Timothy Olyphant's lead her role expanded -- as did her hopes. "After we had finished the first or second episode, they told me I was going to get 10 episodes. I thought, quite honestly, they seemed so happy with what I was doing, I thought I'd live," she said with an abashed laugh. "It was a poetic and perfect ending for that character, however." Though it's hardly an ending for Martindale's career, she owned up to feeling a certain poetry about the timing of her first Emmy. "I've been doing (this) a long time, and the great thing about time is you can really appreciate (this) so much more," Martindale said. "I don't know if I could have appreciated anything like this had I been 30. "At 60, I'm deeply grateful to be recognized. It's an honor." Contact Jon Weisman at jon.weisman@variety.com
